An estimated 120,000,000 Americans do not have up-to-date estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely deaths.  Possibly more worrisome is the millions of Americans with inefficient estate plans, resulting in large estate tax liabilities that could have been reduced or eliminated with more careful planning.  Due to these staggering figures, a bill was passed in 2008 in the House of Representatives designating the third week in October as “National Estate Planning Awareness Week.”  The purpose of the week is to encourage distribution of estate planning information by professionals to all Americans.
